Action Comics #276 May 1961

Linda Lee is feeling down, she doesn’t have any friends she can confide in because Superman makes her keep her Supergirl identity a secret. But who are these three seemingly super-powered girls that suddenly appear, could they be potential friends … or enemies?

Kara is still under the gag order imposed by Superman (see my entries for the last two days for more information on Superman’s arbitrary decision). Kara is in luck though, three female members of the Legion show up. For no apparent reason besides being annoying they at first don’t tell Kara who they are. It must sound like a good idea to make someone with a secret identity think that their secret has been exposed but on second thought it’s probably not an award-winner. Who knows how the person will react?

The girls have come to take Kara back to the future to try out for an open spot in the Legion roster. This year one boy and one girl will be allowed to join. Among the candidates are three individuals who don’t make it this time but eventually do: Bouncing Boy, Sun Boy and Shrinking Violet. The last candidate is someone Kara recognizes: Brainiac 5. Brainiac 5 looks like his evil ancestor Brainiac who was one of Superman’s most powerful nemesis.

The next step are the initiation tests. We’ve discussed before the arbitrary manner in which these tests are given. Sun Boy and Bouncing Boy quickly show off their powers and Shrinking Violet either had her test off-panel or she was already shrunken down. Supergirl goes on an archeological dig and comes back with ancient relics which shows that she will be a great asset to the Legion if they ever appear on Antiques Roadshow. Brainiac shows off his skills by saving Kara from a rogue Kryptonite meteoroid which, with the whole planet as a target, coincidentally crashes right on her. That is some serious bad luck. I’m not exactly sure why they let him in. Courage isn’t exactly a super-power and mechanical devices, like the force-field belt he used to deflect the meteoroid, aren’t accepted by the Legion as a qualification to be admitted in. On the other hand, if the Legion wasn’t capricious they wouldn’t be the Legion.

On my Legion Jerk © scale this issue gets a:

teehee, who am I?
