Action Comics #282 Nov. 1961 :: The Supergirl of Tomorrow!

Supergirl travels to the far future and fights giant, bird-like monster thingies!

For the first time in history insomnia actually helps someone out. You see, Linda can’t fall asleep therefore Lesla can’t switch places with her. Superman decides to try another experiment to see if he can figure out why Supergirl lost her powers, this time he wants her to travel to the future to see if her powers return. They obviously do, since her powers re-appeared when they traveled into the past in the last issue. Supergirl decides to be productive during her stay in the future by helping the citizens overthrow a nutty dictator.

Supergirl decides to return to her own time, power-less, because that’s where her loved ones are. She decides to give up on her Supergirl persona but first she puts on her costume one last time. Miraculously her powers reappear! Not only does she regain her old powers but now she’s immune to the effects of Kryptonite! This new and improved Supergirl is ‘mightier’ than her older cousin. Was that green tinge on Superman’s skin caused by the Kryptonite or by envy? The only person more surprised than Supergirl that her powers returned is Lesla-Lar but before Lesla can do anything about it the Kandorian police arrest her for conducting illegal experiments. Lesla-Lar’s ending is anti-climatic, I was expecting a showdown with Supergirl or at the very least Supergirl finding out what the hell has been happening to her for the last few issues.

Lex is left high and dry too, ‘Supergirl’ never provided some vital ingredients needed for his Kryptonite-Ray. But how did Supergirl regain her powers? It turns out Mr. Mxyzptlk (I copied and pasted that) wanted to play a prank on Superman by granting a mundane person super-powers mightier than Superman’s. He coincidentally (sure) saw Linda wearing her costume for the last time and couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Lesla-Lar’s power-stealing ray had no effect on her now because Mr. Mxyzptlk’s powers are magic-based.
