Action Comics #271 Dec. 1960

Supergirl gets adopted and blackmailed all in the same day!

This issue begins with Kara feeling kinda blue. You see, Superman makes Kara keep her Supergirl persona a secret so that he can use her as a ‘secret weapon’ or to take his place without anyone being the wiser (she wears a Superman exo-suit). Kara/Linda must live at an orphanage because adoptive parents might find out about her secret. If I was feeling kinda down I’d read some comics or watch TV but Kara is a Super-girl who needs a super-solution to her super-blues. That solution turns out to be constructing a Fortress of Solitude for herself. Yup, the lonely girl decides to build a Fortress of Solitude. Having never built one before Kara builds hers WAY to close to the surface and in a region known for archeological digs. Kara scrounges up some scrap materials, including what seems to be an older Mac computer, and some knickknacks from outer space and builds herself a Fortress of Feeling Better about Herself. Unfortunately she constructs a statue of herself clearly labeled to reveal her identity. She can thank her lucky stars she didn’t build a ‘Clark Kent is Superman’ statue after what happens next.

Grave robbers Archeologists quickly find her Fortress of Cheerfulness and one of them decides to use his knowledge of Linda’s secret identity for his monetary benefit. Mr. Evil Goatee and his wife adopt Linda and trick her into amassing a fortune for them. When they get too greedy and Linda objects they pull their trump card and blackmail Supergirl into gathering more treasures for them.

Supergirl builds a palace full of treasures and while they are checking out their ill-gotten goods Streaky coincidentally (sure) shows up. Streaky accidentally (sure) uses his x-ray vision on Mr. E Goatee and his wife which causes them to loose their memories of Linda and her secret identity. Everything is wrapped up in a neat little bow with Linda/Kara destroying her Fortress of Glee and then returning to her awesome life at the orphanage.

On my patented Supergirl Wink © scale this issue gets:

6 Winks.
