Today’s news that Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen are teaming up on this December’s Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 got me thinking about the current Legion comic offerings. I’m sad to say that neither current title excites me and a few issues (especially Adventure Comics #516) were downright bad. I don’t outright dislike the ‘retro-boot’ Legion; I enjoyed The Lightning Saga , LOVED the Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes story arc and I got a kick out of the fan-wank Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds. Adventure Comic‘s current ‘forgotten stories of the Legion’ is boring me, I don’t want to read R.J. Brande’s origin story! The Legion of Super-Heroes title is slightly more interesting but already relying too much on Legion nostalgia (Levitz!, Giffen!, The Great Darkness Saga!).
Look, for me it’s all about the limited comic book budget I work with. No matter how big of a Legion fan I am I’m not going to buy a title which leaves me bored twice a month. I’m going to stick with the two titles until at least the Annual, if the story telling doesn’t improve then I’ll have to drop at least one (if not both) title.
